‘Do You Dairy?’ Giveaway

The Midwest Dairy Council recently conducted a survey which found that consumers are shifting priorities when making grocery purchase decisions in this economic climate.  More than half of consumers say price — not nutrition — is the most important factor when grocery shopping in the current economy.  We’re  proud to be helping the The Midwest Dairy Council spread the word about how dairy makes sense in this economic climate.

Did you know?

  • Milk packs nine essential nutrients at only 25 cents per glass!  Many designer drinks, sodas and fruit drinks are high in calories and expensive, which won’t help your wallet or your waistline.
  • Though protein is one of the most expensive parts of the diet, dairy foods are one of the most economical sources of protein and calcium, both of which are important for the growth and development of strong bones and teeth.
  • A one-ounce serving of hard cheese, like cheddar, contains 8 grams of protein, and an eight-ounce serving of yogurt provides nearly a third of your suggested daily calcium intake.

Suffice it to say that dairy’s nutritional value can benefit your family and give you an excellent bang for your buck when it comes to nutrition.   Check out the fun, interactive cow-culator at the Dairy Makes Sense website.  While you're there, don't forget to check out their dairy recipes!

Oh wow, am I the first?
My daughter hates drinking milk and will only eat certain cheeses (and never melted, so no pizza, grilled cheese, quesadillas, etc.). So I try to pack in dairy in every other way. I add cottage cheese to pancakes and corn muffins (a full cup or more and the kids don’t detect it), make lots of fruit smoothies with yogurt and milk (with frozen blueberries, strawberries and sliced bananas + frozen OJ concentrate–all the frozen fruit gives it great texture and concentrates the nutrition–instead of ice cubes, which is just water), and even use condensed milk as a topping for waffles and french toast (both also made with milk, of course). I actually got the condensed milk idea from Winnie the Pooh! We also freeze the smoothie into popsicle molds and give them to the kids all day. They think they’re getting a treat; I know they’re getting 1/4 cup of dairy in every one.

My favorite dairy recipe is banana cream pie. I make banana pudding according to the directions, mix in chopped bananas and 2 cups of whipcream, mix. I get an already premade graham cracker crust and put in the oven and bake to a golden brown, spread the pudding mixture in and chill for two hours. It is a favorite in my family and something we make every summer.

We definitely enjoy quesadillas (no specific recipe we change it up for variety) but those frozen pudding pops Jane mentioned do sound like quite the treat! They sure don’t make pudding pops like they used to when I was a kid.

I’ve introduced my boys to the wonderful world of fruit smoothies, which of course include milk! They suck those down faster than almost anything else.

At my house we love just plain ol’ Vitamin D Milk. We each have a big glass with our dinner. Doesn’t get any easier or better than that!! 🙂

I love banana pudding with nilla wafers. Then if the kids are going to bed, I can add a little bit of rum just for me… 🙂 Delicious Combo. My kids are milk fiends, so my daughter’s voe is for milk with Ovaltine!!

Here is a fast recipe with dairy:
Baked Ziti (or any other favorite pasta)
    You’ll need:
16 oz of pasta, boil as directed on package
One two cup package of shredded mozzarella cheese
One 14-16 oz container of ricotta cheese
    Jar of spaghetti sauce
    parmesan cheese for topping
I mix all the ingredients together, or you can layer them in a cake pan or cassarole pan, bake at 350 degrees for about 25 to 30 minutes.
Serve with cheese bread and salad, fast, affordable and dairy-minded!
